Kayaking at Lake Tahoe’s Sand Harbor
Kayaking is a great way to explore Sand Harbor during the summer months. I had some friends up from the bay area that wanted to get out on the lake, so we decided to rent kayaks. We rented two tandem peddle kayaks from Tahoe City Kayak. The people there are friendly, very helpful and they deliver the kayaks right to the beach. After just a few minutes of instruction we were sent on our way.
The rock formations in the harbor are incredible. As we peddled south we saw a few boats, kayakers and a seaplane overhead.
We made it down to the Thunderbird Lodge just in time to see the Thunderbird pull out of it’s boat house.
There were several spectators on the water waiting for the fifty five foot boat to maneuver into position and head across the lake.
A little further south to the next bay we found a wonderful beach where we stopped for a picnic and a quick swim.
If you decide to kayak at Sand Harbor, I would suggest starting in the morning before the harbor gets too crowded. The kayaks we rented came with dry bags and plenty of storage; this allowed us to bring lunch and extra clothing for the cool morning. We spent about four hours on the water, which was the perfect amount of time.
If you do go kayaking, let me know how it goes in the comment section below.

Thanks for the tip. My wife recently rented from the outfitter you recommended and had a wonderful time. Thanks also for the tip to go in the morning as opposed to the afternoon.
