Flights from the Truckee Airport are some of the most scenic flights I have ever made.
Flying from the Truckee Airport to the Auburn airport (KAUN) is short and scenic. In fact as soon as you clear the mountain tops it’s almost time to start your decent into Auburn.
Along the route there are several lakes to see including: Donner Lake, Frog Lake, Lola Montez Lake, Spalding Lake and many more.
Once you have landed you can park your plane in front of the Wings Grill and Espresso Bar. They offer patio dining where you can see your plane and watch others take off and land. This is a great place to bring the kids for both entertainment and a meal. They serve both breakfast and lunch. The menu has a good variety. One of my favorites is the breakfast burrito and it’s huge! If you order it you might want to recalculate your weight and balance before takeoff.
If you are low on fuel, the FBO offers both self and full service fuel. The pilot shop is located next to the restaurant. They have all they basic necessities including charts, oil, books etc. and they are a Garmin Dealer. They also have a pilot lounge where you can relax and check on the weather.
If you head north after your departure you can fly over Nevada County airport (KGOO). They also sell fuel and have a nice lounge with friendly people at the front desk. During the summer months Cal-Fire is on the field and ready at a moments notice. Watching them as the come in to land is quite a site.
