Eagle Lake is a great day flight from the Truckee Tahoe Airport (KTRK).
Spaulding Airport (1Q2) is located at the waters edge of Eagle Lake. I have landed at the airport several times and it can be a little challenging when the wind comes up. Unfortunately the wind sock has been is such poor shape, that it can not be relied upon, so watch for wind indications on the lake as you fly over. According to AOPA the runway is only 50 feet wide and in poor shape. I have heard there are plans to repave the runway, but the last time I landed there it was pretty rough.
Now for the good news:
The airport is easy to maneuver around and it has plenty of tie-downs. The Eagle Lake RV Park is just across the street and the boat launch is just down the street.
The Eagle Lake RV Park has several options for lodging including cabins, tent sites, trailers and RV sites for up to 45FT with hook-ups.
They also have a well stocked grocery store. The boat launch has several slips, restrooms and an area for fish cleaning. All the facilities including the parking lot are very clean and well maintained.
When I fly to Eagle Lake with my wife Toni, we usually bring a picnic lunch and explore the area. There are several hikes in the area and the terrain seems to change every mile. The neighborhood has quite a variety of houses, everything from trailers to log homes. Some of the streets are paved and some dirt and it’s always interesting to walk them.
