Alpenglow Race At The Tahoe Cross Country Center, Tahoe City, CA
Today we volunteered at the aid station for the Alpenglow Race at the Tahoe Cross Country Center in Tahoe City.
Last night it snowed about 3 inches and continued until about 9:00am this morning. We drove to the Nordic Center, checked in at the lodge and picked up a radio. As we started skiing up to the top of Gold where it meets the Bronze trail we met Chad, an employee of the center. He picked us up on a snowmobile and gave us a ride the rest of the way.
We were at the top with plenty of time to set up a table, mix up five gallons of GU2O and open a variety of flavors of GU energy gel packets. We neatly set everything up on a table in preparation to hand out to the racers. The first few racers were several minutes ahead of the pack. The longer the race went on the larger the groups became and the faster we had to work to keep up and make sure everyone was offered a drink and a pack of GU as they raced through our station.
One skier arrived with a missing ski. He’d broken the other one on the way up. He borrowed one of Toni’s skis and off he went. Later that day we learned he had won the Tahoe Rim Tour Race a few weeks earlier.
After serving the last racer, Chad came by on his snowmobile and we cleaned up and headed down to the lodge for a bar-b-que. Chad gave Toni a ride so she wouldn’t have to ski down on one ski and I got to ski back.
The awards were presented to the winners and we enjoyed a great bar-b-que.
There were about 115 entries and they all seemed to have a great time.
