First Tracks at the Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area

Paul Smith said on November 21st, 2011 filed under: ACTIVITIES, COMMUNITY, LOCAL AREA PHOTOS, LOCAL NEWS, PLACES TO SEE

Actually I think they were the second tracks, but it sure was nice out there.

Today was my first day of skiing at the Nordic Center. The coverage was  a little light, but good enough to make it around the Green Loop. I saw another skier that told me he made it out to Silver. Kevin, at the Nordic Center, said if we get 6 inches out of the next storm he would start grooming. I hope to you see you out there this year.

Dollar Reservoir is just a short walk from the Highlands Subdivision

Dollar Reservior, The Highlands

Dollar Reservoir is just a short hike from the Highlands. You can access trails to the reservoir from the  Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area Lodge.  The lodge is located on Village Drive.  As we get into winter the trails will be groomed for skate skiing and striding.  Ski passes can be purchased at the Lodge.

Stateline Fire Lookout Hike, Brockway

Paul Smith said on October 28th, 2011 filed under: ACTIVITIES, COMMUNITY, LOCAL AREA PHOTOS, PLACES TO SEE

Stateline Fire Lookout is a great hike, if you don’t have a lot of time.Brockway Fire Lookout

To get to the beginning of the trail/road, go up Reservoir Road, which is behind the Tahoe Biltmore, take Lakeview Avenue to the right and watch for Lookout Road that comes down from the left. The hike is really more of a walk, in-that you’re on a paved road.  The walk  takes less than 30 minutes.  If you take the time to enjoy the views and read the placards filled with history and maybe bring a lunch, you could easily spend a  couple hours.  The original lookout tower is no longer standing, but you can get a feel of how it must have been for the person tending the Fire Lookout. From this viewing area you can see from California to Nevada.

Brockway Fire Lookout_1If you do bring a lunch there is a nice picnicking area with tables, trash cans and restrooms. There are also walking paths and benches to enjoy the views.

Emerald Bay Campground, Lake Tahoe

Emerald Bay Campground View Point

Planning For Tahoe Camping.

I have lived at Lake Tahoe for over twenty years and only camped at the lake about five times. So this year I decided to plan at least two camping trips at a Lake Tahoe campground for next summer.

There is a campground on the south side of Emerald Bay where the road is narrow and winds back and forth.  I have noticed it for years but never took the time to stop and see what the campground has to offer. Well, this year I did stop and walked through the campground. I was so impressed that I am going to make a reservation for next summer.

Emerald Bay Campground looking North

The Camp Ground has over 70 camp sites along a paved road that runs through a ravine and at the end opens to some wonderful lake view camp sites.  There are trails to access the lake and you can hike as far as to the entrance of Emerald Bay.  They have all the amenities you would expect such as: barbecues, restrooms, food storage lockers and a small amphitheater.  The only thing it does not offer that I was hoping for, is a place to launch a kayak.

If you have camped here please comment below.

The second camping trip I’m planning for next summer is to circumnavigate the lake by kayak with my son, Justin. If you have done this trip and have any advice, please comment below.  I will share my plans and research for my kayak trip around Lake Tahoe in a future Blog.
