The weather held out, but it was a little cool. There was a BBQ and music playing, creating a wonderful atmosphere on the beach at Lake Tahoe.

View of Donner Lake from Donner Pass Road,

Old US Highway 40

Another reason why we live at Lake Tahoe

Donner Lake Truckee caA few days ago we took a drive from Donner Lake to the end of US Highway 40.  The views along the highway are incredible as you can see in the photo above.  At the end of the highway we parked at Big Bend camp and went cross country skiing. The skiing was a little difficult due to the snowmobile tracks, but we still had a great time.

Part 4 of 10 flights from the Truckee Tahoe Airport (KTRK)

Paul Smith said on January 24th, 2011 filed under: FLYING, PLACES TO SEE, RESTAURANTS

Yesterday we flew to Quincy, Gansner Field (2O1).

Yesterday in Tahoe City the sun was shinning and the sky was blue with just a few clouds.  My wife Toni and I headed to the Truckee Tahoe Airport (KTRK) around noon and we were in the air within an hour.

There were several large jets at the airport but none of them were moving.  The airport was pretty quiet with the exception of a couple planes in the pattern.

Flight from Truckee Tahoe AirportAs soon as we climbed to about 7,500 feet I could see a real difference in the amount of snow since last week.  We could sure use another set of storms.

Most of the lakes we flew over still look well frozen.  I could see snowmobile tracks going over Prosser Reservoir.Landing Quincy Airport 2O1

When we arrived within 10 miles of Quincy, there was one plane taking off and one on down wind.  That was all the traffic we saw.  If you have never landed here, be sure to do some research.  Landings can be a little tricky.  On down wind the airport is hidden behind a mountain. Part 3 of 10 Flights from the Truckee Tahoe Airport (KTRK)

Flight from Truckee (KTRK) to Chester, Rogers Field Lake Almanor (O05)

It was one of those days in the winter, that you  say to yourself, “This is a good day to take a flight.”  In the winter it is important to take advantage of those days, as sometimes you may not be able to take your plane out of the hanger for up to 3 weeks.

We arrived at the airport mid-morning to find a fellow pilot at his hanger and proposed we take a flight of two to get some lunch. We were thinking of Quincy (Gansner Field 201), and before you knew it we were ready to depart. Him and his wife in their plane and Paul and me in ours.

We established a common frequency to communicate on and we were off.

Lake Almanor

The weather lately has been producing fog in the valley, so wouldn’t you know, as we approached the valley where Quincy is located, the airport was no where to be seen. Read the rest of this entry »
